ReReef (RCA X Nemo)

When considering coral conservation, many immediately think of tropical reefs, as they are “sexier” (grow in warmer waters, come in a variety of colours and shapes, and are often home to beautiful tropical fish) than their deep-water counterparts. We wanted to use design as a way to address the lack of attention deep-sea corals face.

A Short Video (3 min.) introduction to our ReReef project…

The RCA (Royal College of Art) features an annual cross-disciplinary design challenge called “Grand Challenge”. For the 2021/2022 year, RCA partnered with Extreme-E, Logitech, and Sustainable Ventures.

All twelve shortlist projects can be viewed here.

Here is a truncated illustration of our design process. Since the project spanned only four weeks, we were forced to conduct our research methodologies at an accelerated pace.

Stakeholder mapping.

As team members came from different disciplines of design, I decided to use visual representations to communicate potential designs. Designers share the common language of being visually receptive, which was beneficial to facilitate teamwork.

This is what we envisioned the product lifecycle to be for the ReReef system.

My technical drawings allowed us to show industry professionals how the construction of the ReReef data collection device would be feasible through “off-the-shelf”, proven components.
